Turning Away from the Quran and Sunnah as a Comprehensive Guidance is Kufr

Ibn Abi Zayd al Qayrawaani (one of the main early Maaliki u'lemaa' [d.386 h.]) said "The best and most preferable science and the one CLOSEST TO ALLAH, is KNOWLEDGE OF HIS DEEN [not madh-hab quotes] and His revealed laws commanding what He commanded, forbade, called for and encouraged IN HIS BOOK and by the TONGUE OF HIS PROPHET [not modern mushrik statements contradicting those two primary foundations].......SALVATION [pay attention if you desire it!!!] is by THE BOOK OF ALLAH and the SUNNAH of HIS PROPHET and by following the way of the BELIEVERS of the FIRST GENERATION [not the 15th century of taaghoot dominance and sell out scholars and weak minded sects and parties] "...the best ummah brought forth for mankind" (aali I'mraan 3:110)" ('Risaalatul Qayrawaani [p.133-134])

It is very disgusting and of the clear proofs of kufr against someone, that when they hear ayaat and hadeeth they turn away from them and start to argue. Amazing that someone can do that and think they are a Muslim when not even offering any explanation, proof or shari'ah reason for their rejection. Such people have such a disrespect and aversion to the wahi, they need to tread a fine line not to be declared kuffaar. Allah (swt) says "Let those who oppose his command beware lest a trial might strike them or a painful torment be inflicted on them" (an Noor 24:63) and "Whoever opposes the Messenger after clear guidance has been conveyed to them and follows a way other than the believers then We shall entrust him to what he has turned to and land him in Hell, what an evil refuge" (an Nisaa' 4:115) The one who shows no respect after being presented with ayaat and ahadeeth and start to prattle and ignore evidence and speak over it, are hated by every true lover of Allah and the messenger and will become their enemies and they violate the Book of Allah where He (swt) says "So, when the Quran is recited, listen to it, and be silent that you may receive mercy" (al A'raaf 7:204) and "O You who believe! Do not be forward before Allah and His messenger and have taqwa of Allah. Verily, Allah is Sami'un A'leem" (al Hujuraat 49:1) and "O you who believe! raise not your voices above the voice of the Prophet, nor speak aloud to him in talk as you speak aloud to one another, lest your deeds may be rendered invalid while you percieve it not" (al Hujuraat 49:2) and “O you who believe! Obey Allah and His messenger and turn not away from him while you are hearing and be not like those who say ‘We have heard’ but they hear not” (al Anfaal 8:20-21) and “When they are summoned to Allah and His messenger so that He can judge between them a group of them immediately turn away” (an Noor 24:46)  Proof for the necessary hatred of the people who violate this, is in the saying of Allah... “Those who dispute about the ayaat of Allah without any authority that has come to them, it is greatly hateful in the sight of Allah and in the sight of those who believe. Thus does Allah seal up the heart of every arrogant tyrant.” (Ghaafir 40:35)

Those who do not refer to the Quran are disbelievers, Quran is not only for u'lemaa and mufassireen it is fard for every Muslim to make it his main guide. Allah (swt) says "What do they not ponder over the Quran? Or is it that there are locks upon ther hearts?" (Muhammad 47:24) and "And We send down from the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy for believers thought it increases the zaalimeen nothing except loss" (al Israa 17:82) and "Verily, We have sent down to you the Book as a clarification for all matters, a guidance, a mercy and good news for muslims.” (an Nahl 16:89) and "And certainly, We have brought to them a Book, which We have explained in detail, upon knowledge as a guidance and a mercy to people who believe" (al A'raaf 7:52) and "Verily this Quran narrates to the children of Israel most of that about which they differ. And Verily, it is a guide and a mercy to the believers" (an Naml 27:76-77) and "And We have not sent down the Book to you except that you may explain clearly unto them those things in which they differ and a guidance and mercy to a people who believe" (an Nahl 16:64) and "Verily, therein indeed is a reminder for him who has a heart who listens and witnesses" (Qaaf 50:37) and "This is the Book whereof there is no doubt, a guidance for the muttaqeen" (al Baqarah 2:2) and "Verily, this Qura'n guides to that which is most straight and gives good news to the believers, those who do righteous actions that they shall have a great reward" (al Israa' 17:9) and "We have not sent down the Quran to cause you distress, But only as a Reminder to those who fear" (Ta Ha 20:2-3) Those who never read the Quran, never study it, never quote it, never take it as their criterion for action should reflect about what will happen on Yawmil Qiyaamah and consider who they will be among, Allah (swt) says "And the Messenger will say 'O My Lord! Verily, my people deserted this Quran'" (al Furqaan 25:30)

In fact, not only was the Quran not restricted to scholars, it was even for the kuffaar to gain from it...indeed the Prophet (saw) continually addressed the disbelievers with the Quran and many ayaat adress the believers in forms such as the following "O Mankind!", "O People of the Book", "O Bani Adam", "O Bani Israa'eel", "O Disbelievers" etc and Allah (swt) says "The month of Ramadaan in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion..." (al Baqarah 2:185) and "So obey not the disbelievers but strive against them with the utmost endeavour with it (the Quran)." (al Furqaan 25:52) and "O mankind! Verily there has come to you a convincing proof from your Lord and We sent down to you a manifest light" (an Nisaa'4:174)

A sign of the kufr of people is the lack of fear of the Words of Allah and lack of respect in dealing with them and in ignoring them. The believer is frightened when he hears the Words of Allah and immediately submits to it, even if it is a hated person who conveys the truth to him...Allah (swt) says:-

  • "Verily, those who were given knowledge before it, when it is recited to them, fall down on their faces in humble prostration, and they say 'How perfect is our Lord. Truly the promise of our Lord must be fulfilled, and they fall down on their faces weeping and it adds to their humility." (al Israa 17:107-109)

  • "And that those who have been given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord, and that they may believe therein, and their hearts may submit to it with humility. And verily, Allah is the Guide [Haadi] of those who believe to the Straight path" (al Hajj 22:54)
  • "Verily the believers are only those who when Allah is mentioned feel fear in their hearts and when His ayaat are recited to them, they increase them in their imaan and upon their Lord they put their trust." (al Anfaal 8:2)

  • “Allah has sent down the Best Speech, a Book, its parts consistent with each other, oft repeated. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it. Thereafter, their skins and hearts soften to the remembrance of Allah. That is the guidance of Allah. He guides with it whom He wills and whosoever Allah sends astray, for him there is no guide." (az Zumar 39:23)
  • "Has not the time come for the hearts of those who believe to be softened by the remembrance of Allah and of the truth that has been sent down, and not to be like those who had been given the Book before, whereby the term was lengthened for them and their hearts became hard and many of them are the faasiqoon" (al Hadeed 57:16)

  • "And what is the matter with them that believe not? And when the Quran is recited to them they fall not prostrate" (al Inshiqaaq 84:20-21)

As for the kaafir, he hears the Quran and ignores it. In some discussions people will hear a point supported by clear proof from the Quran and will ignore it, and when they hear some scholar or even a fake scholar quoted, they will start to cheer and offer many words of support, just as keep happens in this room of many jaahils. A'bdullah ibn U'mar reported that Rasool Allah (saw) came out to us one day red faced [angry] while we were arguing about a verse of the Quran and said "What are you doing?" We said 'We are arguing about a verse of the Quran' He (saw) said "Do not argue about the Quran because arguing about the Quran is kufr" (TABARAANI) and Ibn A'bbaas reported that Nabi (saw) "Verily, any person who does not have any Quran in his heart is like an empty house" (TIRMIDHI) and Jaabir reported that Nabi (saw) said "The Quran is an intercessor, its intercession is accepted and it is an argumentative opponent and its argument is accepted. Whoever puts it in front of him, it will lead him to paradise, however, whoever puts it behind is back, it will drive him to Hell" (IBN HIBBAAN and similar from Ibn Masoo'd in TABARAANI)

After hearing such evidence, only kuffaar with locks on their hearts can be so excited to learn the words of men and quote them while abandoning the remembrance of the Quran and its judgement, it is like the ayah says “We have made things clear in this Quran so that they might take heed, but it only makes them run away more!” (al Israa 17:41) and many shayaateen claiming to be scholars are being followed today, with no evidence supporting their kufr, Allah (swt) says “And among mankind is he who disputes concerning Allah, without knowledge and follows every rebellious shaytaan. For him it is decreed that whosoever follows him he will mislead him and will drive him to the torment of the Fire.” (al Hajj 22:3-4)

Imaam ash Shaatibi [d.790 h. MAALIKI] said 'If it is established that the Quran does not have in itself any contradiction, then it is correct for it to be a judge between all disputants. Since it just affirms the meaning and that is the truth and there is no contradiction in the truth. Therefore the Quran is a judge in all differences emanating from man. Allah (swt) says "...if you dispute in a matter then refer it back to Allah and His messenger if you believe in Allah and the Last Day that is better for you..." (an Nisaa' 4:59) Hence this is a proof that the truth in it is clear and that the explanation in it is sufficient and nothing else can take its place..." (al I'tisaam [2/309])

People are divided into disbelievers and believers on the basis of their stance they adopt on verses of the Quran, millions of people can be declared kuffar by a single verse which condemns a people who cling to a particular deviation, indeed, Allah (swt) says "Verily, this is the Word which separates" (at Taariq 86:13) and U'mar reported that Rasool Allah (saw) said "Indeed Allah ta A'la raises the status of certain people by this Book and lowers the status of others with it" (MUSLIM) and it is reported by Abu Maalik al Asha'ree that Nabi (saw) said "...and the Quran is either a proof for you or against you" (MUSLIM) and Allah (swt) says "...By it He misleads many and many He guides thereby. And by it He misguides only those who are the faasiqeen" (al Baqarah 2:26)

Whoever hears the ahkaam clearly based upon the Quran and rejects them is a kaafir, many people argue with the Quran and they have no daleel, no i'lm no signs to support themselves, just desires and emotions....such people are clear kuffaar and Allah described them in may ayaat, Allah (swt) says “Those who dispute about the ayaat of Allah without any authority that has come to them, it is greatly hateful in the sight of Allah and in the sight of those who believe. Thus does Allah seal up the heart of every arrogant tyrant.” (Ghaafir 40:35) and “Verily, those who dispute about the ayaat of Allah without any authority having come to them, there is nothing else in their chests except pride. They will never have it. So seek refuge in Allah. Verily it is He who is As Saameul Baseer” (Ghaafir 40:56) and “And among men is he who disputes about Allah, without knowledge or guidance or a Book giving light. Bending his neck (away from the truth in pride) and leading (others) astray from the Path of Allah. For Him there is disgrace in this worldly life and on the Day of Ressurection We shall make him taste the torment of burning.” (al Hajj 22:8-9) and "Yet of mankind is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge or guidance or a Book giving light. And when it is said to them: ‘Follow that which Allah has sent down’ they say ‘Nay, we shall follow that which we found our fathers (following).’ Even if Shaytaan invites them to the torment of the Fire” (Luqmaan 31:20-21)

People should not discuss any subject or debate about any matter if they do not know those things which can exclude them from Islam, as their tongue may push them into the Fire. Discussion in Islam has rules and one of these rules is the strict respect for points supported by ayaat and ahadeeth. If anyone disagrees even with interpretation of ayaat and ahadeeth, they must be very careful how they respond. If someone mentions ayaat and ahadeeth, they must be silent and consider carefully what they say. The deen is not a game nor is it a hobby for prattlers. People too quickly dismiss matters without even considering whether there are ayaat and ahadeeth that support them or not.

It is reported that NAbi (saw) said "People are stupid enough to dislike what their prophet brought them, preferring someone else to their prophet or another book to their Book" So it was revealed "Or is it not enough for them that We  sent down the Book on them which is recited to them" (al A'nkaboot 29:51) (ABU DAWOOD, DAARIMI)

A'li ibn Abi TAlib (r) joined together hajj and umra and U'thmaan (r) (the khaleefah) said to him 'Why do you do this when you know that I have forbidden the people to do it?' A'li replied "I do not abandon the sunnah of RAsool Allah for the statement of anyone" (QAADI A’YAAD ash Shifaa bi ta'rif huqooq Mustafaa and the statement of A'li is in BUKHAARI)

Abu Hurayrah reported that Nabi (saw) said "The BEST SPEECH is the BOOK OF ALLAH and the best guidance, is the guidance of Muhammad and the worst of affairs are innovations" (MUSLIM)

al Hakam ibn U'mayr reported that Nabi (saw) said "The Quran is hard and difficult for anyone who hates it. It is judgement. Whoever clings to what I say and understands it and retains it, then it will be like the Quran for him. Whoever considers the Quran and what I say unimportant and neglects it, loses the world and the next. My ummah is commanded to take my words and obey my command and follow my sunnah. Whoever is pleased with my words is pleased with the Quran. Allah says "Take what the messenger brings you..." (al Hashr 59:7)(ABU NUA'YM, DAYLAMI, ABU SHAYKH)

A'bdullah ibn al Mubaarak said 'I was with Maalik when he was teaching us hadeeth. A scorpion stung him sixteen times. He changed colour and grew quite pale, but DID NOT INTERRUPT THE AHADEETH of the messenger of Allah. When he finished and people had departed, I said to him 'Abu Abdullah! I saw you do something extraordinary today! He said 'Yes, I endured it out of respect for the messenger of Allah' Hishaam ibn al Ghaazi asked Maalik about a hadeeth while standing up and Maalik struck him twenty times with a whip. Then he had pity on him and taught him twenty hadeeths. Hisham said 'I wish that he had given me more blows then more ahadeeth" (both reports from ash-Shifa bi ta'rif huqooq Mustafaa)

I finally end with with some muhkam ayaat on the kufr of those turning away from the ayaat of Allah, if this does not prevent people from jumping to argue, when the Quran has just been conveyed, then let them take their abode in the Fire, Allah (swt) says:-

  • “…Who then does more wrong than one who rejects the ayaat of Allah and turns away therefrom? We shall requite those who turn away from Our ayaat with an evil torment because of their turning away.” (al Ana’m 6:157)

  • “But those who reject Our ayaat and treat them with arrogance, they are dwellers of the Fire, they will abide therein forever.” (al A’raaf 7:36)
  • “Who is more wrong than one who invents a lie against Allah or rejects His ayaat? For such their appointed portion shall reach them from the Book until when Our messengers come to them to take their souls, they will say ‘Where are those whom you used to call on besides Allah?’ They will reply ‘They have vanished and deserted us’ And they will bear witness against themselves, that they were disbelievers.” (al A’raaf 7:37)

  • “Verily, those who belie Our ayaat and treat them with arrogance, for them the gates of heaven will not be opened and they will not enter Paradise until the camel goes through the eye of a needle. Thus do We recompense the mujrimoon” (al A’raaf 7:40)
  • “Those who reject Our ayaat, We shall gradually seize them in ways they percieve not.” (al A’raaf 7:182)

  • “And be not of those who belie the ayaat of Allah for then you shall be one of the losers” (Yoonus 10:95)
  • We send not the messengers save as bearers of good news and warners. Those who disbelieve contend with falsehood in order to refute the Truth thereby. And they take Our revelations and that wherewith they are threatened as a jest. And who doth greater wrong than he who hath been reminded of the revelations of his Lord, yet turneth away from them and forgetteth what his hands send forward (to the Judgment)? Lo! On their hearts We have placed coverings so that they understand not, and in their ears a deafness. And though thou call them to the guidance, in that case they can never be led aright.” (al Kahf 18:56-57)

  • “And when Our clear ayaat are recited to them, you will notice a denial on the faces of the disbelievers! They are nearly ready to attack with violence those who recite Our ayaat to them. Say: ‘Shall I tell you of something worse than that? The Fire which Allah has promised to those who disbelieve, and worst indeed is that destination!” (al Hajj 22:72)
  • “And who does more wrong than he who invents a lie against Allah or denies the truth when it comes to him? Is there not a dwelling in Hell for disbelievers?” (al A’nkaboot 29:68)

  • “And when Our verses are recited to such a one, he turns away in pride as if he heard them not, as if there were deafness in his ear. So announce to him a painful torment.” (Luqmaan 31:7)
  • “And who does more wrong than he who is reminded of the ayaat of his Lord, then he turns aside therefrom? Verily, We shall extract retribution from the mujrimoon?” (as Sajdah 32:22)

  • “Yes! Verily, there came to you My ayaat and you denied them and were proud and were among the disbelievers.” (az Zumar 39:59)
  • “None disputes in the ayaat of Allah but those who disbelieve. So let not their ability of going about here and there through the land deceive you.” (Ghaafir 40:4)

  • "And those who disbelieve say 'Do not listen to this Qura'n and make a noise in the midst of it so that you may overcome'" (Fussilat 41:26)
  • And those who dispute about Our ayaat may know that there is no place of refuge for them” (ash Shoora 42:35)

  • And who does more wrong than the one who invents a lie against Allah while he is being invited to Islam? And Allah guides not a people who are zaalimoon.” (as Saff 61:7)

May Allah make us to die as those who believe in the Quran, and accept its judgement and recite it and convey it and make it a criterion for action and not of those kuffar who ignore it and argue against it.
